Does Creativity Need an Origin Story?

I’ve been thinking about creativity lately. Why do we make things?

Art has helped people survive terrible things, start revolutions, build communities, say what couldn’t otherwise be said. Creativity can be a release for anger, grief, resistance, longing.

And some people create from joy. From curiosity, safety, love, contentment, happiness. As an expression of joyful abundance. From seeing something beautiful and wanting to add to it.

I think that’s where I’ve always created from.

My ideas tend to come when I feel open to the world. When I’m noticing colours, people, tiny details, ridiculous combinations. When making something feels more like play than work.

It makes me wonder whether creativity usually comes from one dominant feeling — something you want to hold onto, amplify, escape from, or work through — or whether there’s a way to channel creativity from all kinds of emotional states.

I personally find it very hard to create from a negative headspace. I feel like I need to feel happy, hopeful, or at least open to life before I can make anything that feels like me.

But I wonder if that’s true for everyone.

Can you create in any headspace?
